Sometimes, it’s interesting to see how an Artist works; to understand the layers that go into creating the finished work. To get an insight into their creative processes, learning that in turning the 3D world into a representation on a 2D canvas, every piece contains a joyful number of problems to solve. If that’s something that interests you, then you need to check out my In the Studio links.
I say joyful, because to me, I’m trying to help the piece find a way of saying what I want it to say – and that process of bringing work to life is indeed joyful, liberating and exciting.
With this in mind, I’ve created some links below to some of the artworks where I have remembered to capture the journey I’ve taken and the process of mark making and layering that is so important to me.
Usually, capturing it digitally is forgotten as I lose myself in the process of creating the work; judging by the brilliant email feedback you’ve been kind to send to me though, I plan to improve how often I remember to do this and to improve the quality of the slideshows (every day is a school day)
Hope you find them interesting to view.

Timelapse from Colinton Arts Gallery (August 2022)
In August I was delighted to be invited into Colinton Arts Gallery during #Fringe2022 to demonstrate, over 2 days, my painting techniques. Whilst I already had work in the summer exhibition which featured an ocean/seascape theme, I brought in 2 large paintings of the Edinburgh Pentland Hills that I was working on since these have proved popular with the lovely buyers in the gallery. My lovely other half recently upgraded to a new camera and popped in to trial a time lapse of my work. See what you think below: Brian's own work as a photographer can be viewed at https://www.briannicholsonphotography.com/
In the Studio – Zebra – For Sale
A painting of a young zebra that I was lucky to get up close to on a wonderful holiday (pre-covid). A brilliant artist of mine had spoken of the technical challenges of painting black and white (and white in the shade and black in the sunshine) in a convincing way. Never one to shy away from a challenge I painted Zebbie. Hope you love her as much as I do x
In the Studio – Iris – For Sale
This gorgeous horse is one of a few dotted across the Braid Hills (close to the Hermitage) and belonging to the Tower Farm Riding School .
In the Studio – Storm, interrupted
Whilst the original painting from the Crail coastline has sold, you can still own a museum quality limited edition giclée of this artwork printed onto archival paper or canvas. Email me for details. If you haven’t been, Crail is a beautiful fishing village in the stunning East Neuk of Fife – check out some details here to inspire your next (or first) visit Crail in Fife. (welcometofife.com)
So this is one of my current favourite paintings painted in the studio following a visit to the region in Umbria. Who doesn’t like gorgeous old trees?
