SSA 126th Annual Exhibition | Society of Scottish Artists

We can think of no better way to close out 2024 at the SSA than with this celebration of contemporary art in Scotland and we are especially delighted to be bringing the SSA’s 126th Annual Exhibition back to the Royal Scottish Academy, Edinburgh.

The SSA Annual Exhibition is one of the largest contemporary art exhibitions in Scotland. It is produced and supported entirely by artists with no public funding. The exhibition will take place at The Royal Scottish Academy, Edinburgh from Saturday 23 November – Wednesday 11 December 2024.

We are an outward-looking Society that is committed to bringing international and local artists together, enriching the creative culture of Scotland and providing a platform for diverse perspectives. We have a proud history of promoting contemporary artists at all stages of their career by exhibiting established and mid-career artists alongside emerging artists and new art school graduates; and with a 126th Annual Exhibition that showcases a spectacular cross-section of what contemporary art in Scotland has to offer, this year is no exception.

We will also be bringing our 30×30 small works display back to the Annual Exhibition. 30×30 is a great opportunity to purchase original works by our members at affordable prices.

Colinton Art’s much anticipated Summer Exhibition launches on Saturday 23 July!

UPDATE – Two of my paintings have been bought in the exhibition and I’m so pleased they have found happy buyers and great homes.

Amazingly, one of them went to a collector who now has 4 of my paintings. That makes me want to start offering a loyalty scheme ! And a second painting went another went to a buyer who messaged me last night to say, “I just wanted to let you know that I successfully fulfilled an ambition today and purchased one of your paintings!! It’s Alone at Last and I love it

I’m delighted that they have chosen 6 of my latest paintings to showcase in their gallery. These 6 pieces are on display from this Saturday. Want to escape the heat? Come down to Colinton Arts from 10am to 5pm; stroll around with a nice chilled glass of Prosecco in your hand. You won’t be disappointed – in addition to my work, there’s a great range of talented artists on display.

Spring Exhibition

During the recent lockdowns and being, at times, restricted to a limited travel radius, many of us took to the hills and other green places to enhance our well-being. I know that we are not all lucky enough to be able to have such majestic beauty on our door steps; I’m forever grateful that I do. These paintings are borne of that time, being quite literally ‘in my back yard’

Hello Art Lovers

A really warm welcome to these gallery pages.

When people learn that I’m an Artist the first thing they always ask is, “what do you paint?”

I always think, “well, how long have you got?” since there’s no quick answer to that.

Perhaps the honest answer is that I paint what my heart loves

Sometimes, I’m creating seascapes of the East Lothian coast – I can’t get enough of the changing light, the reflections, the shadows in the sand or the colours.

Other times though, people grab my attention and I end up painting the humans and little humans who happened to be spending time at the coast when I was there.

Home for Supper

Perhaps you love old boats?  I know very little about sailing but adore old fishing boats or little rowing boats.  There’s something very beautiful in their old, tattered charm and so these pop up in some of my work in paintings of Anstruther, Pittenweem, Newhaven and North Berwick.

Landscapes feature a lot too; I really enjoy painting on cadmium red canvases, leaving selected areas of the underpainting to shine through which really pops against the predominantly lush, green landscape and across these pages you will find landscapes from Scotland and England and also Italy when I have been lucky enough to travel.

I have also started painting animals; I’m drawn to their eyes and how the light reflects in them.  I always start with those and, if they feel like they are coming to life on the canvas then a new piece will be born on my easel.

Flowers feature, albeit briefly, but I hope do spend more time immersed in nature painting more of these.

In all of my work, light and shadow remain very important, as does the very process of mark making.  I’m drawn to impressionist styles of painting but tend to the leave the work to unfold itself and so paint instinctively in a way that feels largely unconscious.

Mostly my work is on coloured canvas.  For a long time, that was red though there are others now on black, cobalt blue, turquoise and cadmium orange too.

Girders No.1 (Oil on aluminium)

I hope you will enjoy browsing the images and will fall in love and give one of these pieces a new forever home.

Warmly,

Tess x
